Chapter 11
âDid you say Cecilia was your daughter?â The befuddled look on my face does nothing to hide the confusion I am feeling.
The woman brushes off the dust that is caked on her pants, and when she bends down, I can see past her into a clearing that reveals the type of world we have entered. It appears that this is a jungle-type world.
Ceciliaâs mother stands back up and makes her way to a large root that is sticking out of the ground, and she eases herself down to sit. As the sun breaks through the dense tree line above us, I can see that she is probably in her late fifties. She is a little woman, but there is clearly something fierce hidden underneath.
âYes, Cecilia is my wonderful baby girl. The real question is how do you know her if she didnât send you to find me?â I can hear a faint semblance of the accent of her world, but it has nearly faded away. She talks as someone who has seen a lot in her lifetime. She almost sounds tired.
âItâs kind of a long story.â
âEveryone is part of a long story. Whatâs your name? That is always the best place to start.â
âJacob.â I take a chance, slowly moving to sit by Ceciliaâs mother, but I keep my guard up with every step I take.
She looks at me with a smirk saying, âAre you afraid little olâ me is going to hurt you? Trust me, if someone is going to hurt you, it will be Dia here.â Ceciliaâs mother motions for her white griffin to come sit by her, which prompts Shadow to quickly come to my side as I sit down. âAlthough I am not sure that Dia would be able to deal with your friend.â She brushes the gray hair out of her eyes as the warm wind blows by us, disheveling it.
The two griffins sit calmly by our sides, but neither of them dares to take their eyes off each other. Shadow may be much larger than Dia, but she is not intimidated in the slightest.
âThis is Shadow; heâs my partner.â Shadow lets out a low growl, yielding a small pop on the head from me.
âWell, with your mannerisms and a name like Jacob, I can only assume that you arenât from Liferné, which really makes me wonder where you got that griffin and, what is even more surprising, how you came to know my daughter.â
I can see the skepticism in her deep brown eyes as she examines Shadow and me. âIâm originally from a planet called Earth, and that is where I met Shadow.â Shadow looks at me as I tell her, âI found him one night when he was baby, and we have been together ever since. It has been quite the crazy ride.â
Ceciliaâs mother pets her griffinâs head before bluntly saying, âAre you with the Beast Riders or Heaven Walkers?â
âThe what?â
She looks me dead in the eyes as she says, âI need to know which group of riders you associate with.
